Introduction
Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded on a definite law Similia Similibus Curantur which means like cures like. The word homeopathy is a Greek derivation where homeos means similar and pathos means suffering. So Homeopathy may be defined as the therapeutic method of symptom - similarity.
According to this system, the choice of the medicine is fundamentally based on the principle that the medicine must have the capability of producing most similar symptoms of the disease to be cured in healthy persons. In sec. 26 of Organon of Medicine Hahnemann gives the therapeutic law as follows: A weaker dynamic affection is permanently extinguished in the living organism by a stronger one, if the latter (whilst differing in kind) is very similar to the former in its manifestations.
Basis of Homoeopathy
The pillar of homeopathic prescription is individualization, i.e. every homoeopathic medicine is prescribed based on the specific needs of a particular person. The homoeopath takes a detailed case history that includes the chief complaint, mental and emotional state, sleep pattern , dreams, appetite, desire, aversion, seasonal preference, childhood and past history/ family history, susceptibility , miasm , etc for a chronic case. In an acute case, the presenting complaint is mainly considered to make a prescription.
Homoeopathic view
Predisposition to disease arises from multiple factors such as physical weakness, environment, psychological imbalance, stress, heredity etc. Homoeopathic treatment works in synergy with the bodys own healing response to bring about optimum state of health and wellbeing. Therefore, a well-selected homoeopathic remedy enhances an individuals self-curative mechanism in both acute and chronic disease states.
Scope of Homoeopathy
Homoeopathic treatment is safe and effective at any age starting from a new-born to geriatric population. Homoeopathic treatment not only addresses the current symptoms the patient is suffering from, but also, removes the tendency to similar occurrences in the future. Treatment with homoeopathy is rapid and gentle, without any long-term dependence on the medicines.
It is a myth that homeopathy is slow acting. Most of the times what happens is the patient comes to us with long history of chronic illness. Therefore the treatment takes time. Homeopathy is in fact fast acting in acute conditions such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, etc.
